Description

This map service displays healthcare resources supply and demand per state, congressional district, and county in the United States.  It shows the number of people per geography (state, congressional district and county), from the U.S. Census Bureau’s 2010 census, divided by the number of health care facilities (hospitals, medical centers, federally qualified health centers, and home health services), provided by the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services.  The health care system capacity is calculated as the number of facilities in the area multiplied by the national average (number of people per facility).  The number of facilities of each type needed is calculated by dividing the area's population by the national average (number of people per facility).  The facility surplus or need is calculated by subtracting the number of facilities needed (based on the population size) from the number of existing facilities.  Number of hospital beds, accessibility and travel time are not considered in these calculations as this data is not available here.We recommend this service be viewed with a 40% transparency.
